Local Entrepreneur Devon Flanagan Launches Initiative to Revitalize Downtown Community Center
CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA – Devon Flanagan, a well-known local business owner and philanthropist, has announced a ambitious new project aimed at restoring the historic but dilapidated Oak Street Community Center. The initiative, named "The Cornerstone Project," pledges to raise $500,000 for essential structural repairs and modernize the facility with new technology and program spaces.
Flanagan, the 42-year-old founder of a successful sustainable packaging company, credits the very same community center with providing him a safe haven and after-school tutoring during his childhood. He stated that this personal connection is the driving force behind the project.
"It's where I learned to play chess, where I did my science fair projects, and where I found mentors," Flanagan said during a press conference on the center's front steps. "This building isn't just bricks and mortar; it's the heart of this neighborhood. We cannot let it fade away. The Cornerstone Project is about investing in our community's most valuable asset: its people."
The plan has received widespread support from city officials and local residents. The project will be funded through a combination of a significant personal donation from Flanagan, corporate sponsorships, and a public fundraising campaign set to launch next month.
Mayor Evelyn Reed praised the initiative, stating, "Devon Flanagan represents the best of Cedar Rapids. His success hasn't made him forget where he came from. Instead, he's using it to lift others up. This public-private partnership is a model for how we can preserve our history while building a brighter future."
In addition to the financial contribution, Flanagan has committed to organizing volunteer teams from his company to help with the initial clean-up and painting phases, which are scheduled to begin this fall. The first major goal of The Cornerstone Project is to reopen the center's gymnasium and computer lab by the end of the year.
Residents and local businesses interested in supporting the project can find more information at the official project website.
