PIA Announces Direct Flights to Barcelona and Milan, Expanding European Reach
ISLAMABAD/KARACHI – Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is set to launch direct flights to Barcelona and Milan, significantly expanding its European network following directives from Defence Minister Khawaja Asif. This move marks a key phase in the airline's post-ban revival strategy.
The decision prioritizes these major European cities due to their substantial overseas Pakistani populations. Milan holds particular significance as it hosts a large community from Defence Minister Asif's hometown of Sialkot, making it a strategically important destination for the national carrier.
Post-Ban Recovery Gains Momentum:
This expansion follows PIA's recent resumption of flights to Manchester, operating three weekly services using Boeing 777 aircraft. The airline has now entered its next phase of European reconnection:- Immediate Focus: Launching new routes to Barcelona (Spain) and Milan (Italy).
- Pending Restoration: Planning to resume flights from Islamabad and Lahore to London and Birmingham, subject to final regulatory approvals.
UK Ban Lifted, Boosting Prospects:
The renewed push into Europe comes after a major milestone in July 2025, when the United Kingdom officially removed Pakistan from its air safety list. British High Commissioner Jane Marriott announced the end of a stringent five-year ban that had prohibited Pakistani airlines from operating in UK airspace.Commissioner Marriott commended the collaborative efforts between Pakistani and UK aviation authorities and notably expressed her personal interest in flying with Pakistani airlines, signaling restored confidence.
Government-Driven Expansion:
Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, overseeing PIA, specifically instructed the airline to expedite the launch of the Barcelona and Milan routes. This directive underscores the government's focus on enhancing connectivity for the Pakistani diaspora in Europe and facilitating trade and travel links. What This Means:
- Diaspora Access: Direct flights will provide easier, more affordable travel for the large Pakistani communities in Barcelona and Milan.
- Trade & Tourism: The routes open new avenues for business travel, cargo shipments, and tourism between Pakistan and these major European hubs.
- Airline Revival: This expansion is a crucial step in PIA's efforts to rebuild its international network and reputation after years of operational restrictions, particularly in Europe.
PIA management is expected to announce specific launch dates, flight schedules, and booking details for the Barcelona and Milan routes in the coming weeks as operational plans are finalized.
